Product Information

Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil

Topical solution applied twice daily.

About this medicine

TOPICAL FINASTERIDE WITH MINOXIDIL combines two clinically proven treatments into one easy-to-use solution. The solution contains 0.05% Finasteride and 5% Minoxidil.

Freshman’s TOPICAL FINASTERIDE WITH MINOXIDIL solution is compounded without alcohol and propylene glycol. Treatments that contain these harsh additives are known to cause itchy scalps, irritation and dandruff.

Finasteride and Minoxidil work synergistically to treat common hereditary hair loss in men aged 18-65 (otherwise known as male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia).

TOPICAL FINASTERIDE has been shown to lower the levels of DHT in the scalp, a major cause of male pattern hair loss. With continued use, Topical Finasteride can help to reverse the balding process and prevent further hair loss.

MINOXIDIL reactivates and revitalises shrunken hair follicles and increases their size. Minoxidil is thought to work by dilating the blood vessels around hair follicles and increasing nutrient supply to the follicles. With continued use, the hair follicles gain greater volume, which helps prevent further hair loss and promotes the growth of longer and thicker hairs.

Main advantages of Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil:

  • One solution contains both Finasteride and Minoxidil
  • Free from alcohol and propylene glycol, which makes it gentle on your scalp
  • Non greasy, dries fast
  • No need to take oral Finasteride tablets
  • Potentially reduced risk of side effects compared to oral Finasteride tablets
  • Has been shown in some studies to work better than Minoxidil or Finasteride alone

How soon can I expect to see results?

Wondering how quickly you can expect to get results from the Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil treatment? We’ve prepared an indicative timeline for you below.

Months 1 – 2

Man with hair loss

During this time, it’s quite common to see some hair shedding. But don’t worry,
this is the natural process your hair follicles go through before growing back
stronger, thicker hairs. This is a great sign that your treatment is starting to work.

Months 3 – 4

Man with hair loss month 3-4

Most guys using Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil will start to see visible results after
3 – 4 months. If you’re not seeing hair regrowth at this point, don’t panic – we’re all different,
and some guys may need to use the treatment for up to 6 months before they see results.

Months 5 – 6 – onwards

Man with hair loss month 5-6 onwards

After using Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil for 5 – 6 months, most guys will start to see significant results,
with little to no hair falling out, and an improvement in new hair growth and overall thickness.
Your hair should continue to get thicker over the coming months, and the full results of the treatment
can be expected after 9 – 12 months.

More information:

  • Male pattern hair loss is a condition that develops over a long period of time and normal hair grows approximately 1.25 cm per month. As such, hair re-growth with Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil also takes time.
  • You may need to use Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil twice a day for 3-6 months before you notice an increase in the hair density or reduction in hair loss. Continued use of the solution is recommended to obtain maximum benefit.
  • New hairs may initially be fine and soft (similar to baby hairs) but should eventually become the same colour and thickness as the other hairs on your scalp. The full results of the treatment can be expected after 9-12 months.
  • When you first begin to use the medicine, your hair loss may increase temporarily for the first 2-6 weeks. This is likely a sign that you are getting rid of old hairs in order to regrow new, better quality hairs. Remember, this hair shedding is temporary, and is actually a great sign that the treatment is starting to work!
  • Once your hair has started to re-grow, you need to continue using Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil twice a day for the growth to be maintained. If you stop the treatment, you are likely to lose the hair you have gained within 9-12 months.
  • If you have no improvement in your hair growth after 6 months of use, you should speak to your dedicated Freshman clinician or consider stopping the treatment.

Is this medicine suitable for me?

Do not take this medicine if:

  • You are allergic to Finasteride, Minoxidil or the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
  • You are a woman (this medicine is for men). Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid handing Finasteride treatments. Finasteride can affect hormone levels, which could lead to complications with pregnancy.
  • Your partner is breastfeeding, pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
  • You have prostate cancer.
  • You have kidney or liver problems.
  • You are under 18 or over 65.

What if the medicine gets in my eyes, mouth or nose?

If the medicine comes into contact with the eyes, mouth, nose; or any broken or sunburnt skin, bathe the area with large amounts of cool tap water.

Are there any possible side effects?

Like all medicines, this Topical Finasteride with Minoxidil can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common side effects are itching and skin irritation of the treated area of the scalp. If scalp irritation continues, you should stop using the medicine and discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

Stop using the medicine and seek medical advice immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Signs of allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
  • Changes in the breast tissue such as swelling, tenderness, or if there is any discharge from the nipple.
  • Chest pain or testicular pain.

Stop using the medicine and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of the following:

  • Dizziness, feeling faint due to low blood pressure.
  • Palpitations and/or fast heartbeat.
  • Swelling in the hands, feet or legs, or shortness of breath.
  • Sudden, unexplained weight gain.
  • Changes such as skin rash and redness where the product is applied.

Other side effects which may occur, include:

  • Excessive hair growth on the face or body.
  • Headache.
  • Temporary hair loss (or shedding) may occur during the first 2-4 weeks of use. This is likely to be a result of a change in the natural hair growth cycle and should stop within a couple of weeks.

Although uncommon, in clinical trials 3.8% of patients receiving a treatment of oral Finasteride tablets noticed some sort of sexual side effects, compared to 2.1% of patients who were taking the placebo. These side effects included less desire to have sex, difficulties with erectile function and decreases in the volume of semen released during sex. The side effects are usually temporary and disappear when the treatment is stopped. It is important to note that these side effects were observed in trials of oral Finasteride (tablet form) and that there is no conclusive evidence that the same symptoms are likely to occur with the use of topical Finasteride.

This is not an exhaustive list of possible side effects. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any concerns.
